Yes, I’m a Liberal Who Used to Be a Republican—But MAGA Ruined Everything

John Derossett - Writer

Politics, like life, is a journey. It’s shaped by personal experiences, evolving values, and a growing understanding of the world. I used to be a Republican, proudly aligning myself with conservative principles like fiscal responsibility, limited government, personal freedom, and a strong national defense. But somewhere along the way, the party I once believed in lost its compass.

The catalyst? MAGA.

The rise of “Make America Great Again” didn’t just shift the Republican Party; it hijacked it, transforming a once-principled movement into a chaotic, grievance-fueled echo chamber. I didn’t leave the Republican Party because I changed. I left because the party did.

What the Republican Party Used to Mean to Me

I wasn’t born into Republican politics—I chose it. I believed in:
Fiscal conservatism—balancing budgets, reducing debt, and spending wisely.
Personal responsibility—the idea that success comes from hard work and accountability.
Respect for institutions—defending the rule of law, democracy, and checks and balances.
Decency and leadership—figures like Reagan, McCain, and even George W. Bush, who, despite flaws, carried a certain dignity and seriousness.

It wasn’t perfect, but it felt like a party that stood for something beyond just winning elections.

Then Came MAGA: A Party of Grievance and Chaos

When Donald Trump descended that golden escalator in 2015, I didn’t realize I was watching the death of the Republican Party I knew. The MAGA movement wasn’t just a political shift—it was a hostile takeover fueled by:

🚩 Conspiracy theories over facts
🚩 Anger over solutions
🚩 Cult of personality over conservative principles
🚩 Division over unity
🚩 Authoritarian tendencies over democracy

It wasn’t about small government anymore; it was about owning the libs. It wasn’t about moral leadership; it was about celebrating cruelty. It wasn’t about law and order; it was about selective outrage, depending on who was breaking the law.

What MAGA Ruined for Me

1️⃣ Truth and Facts Became Optional

The Republican Party I admired respected truth, even when it was inconvenient. Under MAGA, facts became negotiable.

  • COVID-19? “It’s just the flu.”
  • Climate change? “A hoax by China.”
  • 2020 election? “Stolen.”

Truth wasn’t just questioned—it was attacked. Science, journalism, even basic math became enemies if they contradicted the MAGA narrative.

2️⃣ Decency Was Replaced by Cruelty

Political disagreements used to be about policy. Now it’s about dehumanizing the other side. MAGA politics celebrates:

  • Mocking disabled people
  • Bullying war heroes like John McCain
  • Dismissing sexual assault survivors
  • Cheering for migrant kids being separated from their parents

It’s not “tough love”—it’s just mean.

3️⃣ Patriotism Was Rebranded as Blind Loyalty

I grew up believing patriotism meant loving your country enough to hold it accountable. But in the MAGA era:

  • Questioning Trump = unpatriotic
  • Protesting injustice = un-American
  • Blind loyalty = virtue

They wave flags and shout about freedom while attacking the very democracy that gives them that freedom—like on January 6th.

4️⃣ The Party of Law and Order Became Lawless

Republicans used to pride themselves on law and order. But MAGA’s message is clear:

  • The law applies to everyone… except us.
  • Accountability is for the other side.
  • “Blue Lives Matter” (unless the cops are defending the Capitol from MAGA rioters).

5️⃣ Conservatism Was Replaced with Chaos

MAGA isn’t conservative—it’s reactionary. Real conservatism values:

  • Stability
  • Respect for tradition
  • Careful, thoughtful governance

MAGA values rage tweets, owning the opposition, and burning it all down.

Why I’m a Liberal Now

I didn’t wake up one day and decide to be a liberal. I just realized I no longer fit in a party that embraced MAGA.

Being liberal, for me, isn’t about agreeing with every policy. It’s about:
🌍 Believing in facts and science
🤝 Valuing empathy and decency
⚖️ Fighting for fairness and equality
🗳️ Protecting democracy, not undermining it

Final Thoughts: The Party Left Me

I didn’t change. I still believe in hard work, fiscal responsibility, and strong leadership. But the party I once called home is now unrecognizable.

MAGA didn’t make America great again.
It made it angrier, dumber, and crueler.

And that’s why I left.
And why I’m never going back.
